Herbert Douglas Cameron served with the 2nd Australian Remount Unit one of two units formed in 1915 to look after the horses of the Australian Light Horse Regiments.

One of the officers in the unit was Major Andrew Barton Banjo Paterson. It was noted in Herb’s military file that he was admonished for: Failing to salute his superior officer Major Paterson at 8:30am at Heliopolis on 15.5.17.

People who knew Herb after the war stated he maintained a strong dislike for Paterson throughout his life.

His brother Ronald Bowker Cameron 6534 was Killed In Action at Morlancourt, France while and his cousin Maurice Murray Jobson 2647 returned home safely to Australia at the end of the war.

Herbert was buried in an unmarked grave at Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane.
