NOTES : Howard was the son of Oliver Cromwell and Ellen Chambers of Warwick. Howard and three of his brothers, Major Arthur Frank Chambers who died of wounds, Leslie Norman Alec Chambers 5 and Stuart Chambers 4 was killed in action, all enlisted in the First World War.

Howard was married to Sarah Hunter Chambers and they were living in Mackay when he enlisted for the Second World War. Howard, who by this stage was 50 years of age, signed up with the 39th Australian Works Company and served in Papua New Guinea.
