NOTES : John Richard Newlands was born in Winton and was the son of Charlotte Matilda and Robert George Newlands. The family moved to the Goondiwindi region before settling on their farm, The Crest at Cottonvale. John attained his education at Warwick State High School and he went on to  teach at Pinkett Province School in 1925.

On 5 August 1929 he married Sarah Jane Lawler at Glen Innes. The Electoral Roll has him living in Glen Innes and working as a labourer.

John enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on 15 October 1943 and was discharged on 21 June 1946.

After the war John worked in Glen Innes as a cost clerk.
