NOTES :

Samuel Walter Butler was born in Dalveen and was the second son of Samuel and Edith Catherine Butler. By 1903 the family was living in Warwick where his father was working as a stock dealer.

At the time of his enlistment in September 1915, Samuel was working as a labourer and living in Grafton Street, Warwick.

In September 1916 Samuel suffered from a shell wound to the face while fighting in France. Family and friends read about his wounding in an article published in the Warwick Examiner and Times on October 18, 1916. The wound was so severe it resulted in the removal of his left eye.

In January 1918 he was pronounced permanently unfit for general service but fit for home service. Upon his return to Australia, he was discharged on April 29, 1918.

On March 9, 1922, Samuel married Margaret Violet Evans. He worked as a farmer, labourer and a railway worker. At the time of his death, he was living in Ipswich.
