Herbert was the son of Joanna Mary (nee Bishop) and John Douglas.

Very little is known about the life of Herbert Douglas.

His Service File shows he was a thirty-five-year-old labourer who served with the R.A.G.C. and in South Africa prior to his enlistment in Brisbane on September 1914.

He nominated his next of kin as his mother, who was living at Dalveen, Queensland at the time.
