Robert Felmingham Bruce Kinnear was the son of James and Emma Jane Kinnear (nee Felmingham).

An article in the Warwick Examiner and Times dated March 10, 1917 states: Another Dalveen Boy Enlists. Amongst the recent enlistments for the A.I.F. in Toowoomba is that of Robert Bruce Kinnear. Bobby, was until a week ago employed at the local brickworks, and had previously endeavoured to enlist, but failed owing to not quite going the measurement test.

Robert was wounded in action with a gun shot wound to the thigh in France in May 1918. He was treated in Havre and rejoined his unit in July 1918. Wounded for a second time, he suffered from gas poisioning when a shell exploded near him. This required him to be shipped to England for treatment. He returned to Australia aboard the Orentes and was discharged in March 1919.

He married Dorothy Margaret Pember on May 27, 1927.
