NOTES :

Charles Smith who was born in Paddington NSW was the son of Harriet Francis Wallace West Poole (nee Wipers). Harriet married James David Poole two months before Charles birth.

Braeside, was the property Charles was living on at Dalveen when he and Thomas McDonald Browne 299 KIA travelled to Warwick to enlist on August 24, 1914. Prior to his enlistment he was a member of the Queanbeyan Rifle Club in New South Wales for eight and a half years. A marksmen shot and a qualified telegraphist with this group.

Serving in Gallipoli, he suffered a bullet wound to the jaw on August 7, 1915 and was admittend to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis on August 10, 1915.

After his recovery, he was discharged from hospital on May 30, 1916. From there he was detatched to Signal School in Alexandria, Egypt.

Charles was discharged from the AIF in Australia on February 26, 1919.
